Doonagore Castle Tower Doolin

Pen and Ink drawing of Doonagore Castle Tower Doolin, otherwise known as O’Brian’s Tower. I don’t often do on site drawings or paintings of something ‘real’, but I did enjoy it! So often my practice involves delving into the unseen, and trying to make it visible, it was a change to simply look and try to imitate with a pen, a brush and some ink and water, what I saw. Today was the first time I have tried to draw what was in front of me for nearly a year, I would say. I used to do it a lot years ago in every sort of weather condition. Once my friend and I almost took flight of a rocky mountainside near Ballyvaughan with huge boards, the rain nearly washed both our paintings away! Today I enjoyed the comfort of sitting in the car!

  1. Marianne,

My first view of the castle for many years. I have seen a photograph of Doonagore Castle on a box of CARA matches. I really like the way the way in which ‘your’ castle appears in contrast to the ‘billowing’ surroundings. I think that you have drawn the subject from a favourable aspect. I have photographed this building but have never succeeded in getting a vantage point which shows the castle as positively as you have. Well done.

    • Simon,
Thank you so much for your comment, I am glad you like the drawing of the Tower. It is yours! I only had some quite diluted ink instead of black ink, but this was good for me because I had to build up lots of layers to get darker shades. I never would have spent as long with black ink, but I really enjoyed taking my time on it. I would like to see the photographs you took.

  2. We love your drawing of the castle. Katherine will be thrilled with it. We are really looking forward to seeing it ‘live’. Perhaps you will do something similar to have for sale in your gallery. They should be very popular. Good luck.

    • Thank you very much for writing a comment,I am glad you like the drawing. Yes! there is a high possibility there there will be a Lada Niva parked up in various locations around Doolin and The Burren while I do some more drawings. I might even get out of it if it is not too wet and windy!
